Hegman Lake Exploration

Several years ago my sister and I took a Sisters Ski Weekend trip to Ely. We skied into the Boundary Waters to view the pictographs. Fresh, powdery snow covered the trees. The temps were below zero, but the sun was strong and warm. Winter sunlight is always dramatic, and this drawing captures the long shadows of early afternoon while we were returning back from a reflective experience seeing the Hegman Lake Pictographs for the first time. This was one of my first trials at drawing snow, which we all know is white, but ballpoint pen has to capture the subtle shadows on the snow as well as the not so subtle shadows. The detail in the trees took a very long time and hours of focused concentration to complete.
